Revolt
I was in Ethics today and we were having a lively conversation about whether students or teachers should have more rights with regard to the school system. Of course nothing ever gets resolved which apparently isn't the point. However, at one point we started exploring the concept of students as "clients" of the university (or public school) and one gentleman (who is very vocal and very into philosophy) disagreed wholeheartedly about the concept of being a client " because we are in such a capitalistic society its the language that is distorted". The conversation continued with many people agreeing somewhat with the concept of client but then he started saying something to the effect of " Just because people teach doesn't necessarily mean they are smar...." and he trailed off while looking at the prof. She just started to laugh and said not to worry she wasn't offended (she is pretty cool) and obviously the class started some nervous laughter. It was fine, we kept on the conversation but the guy just got up and took his coat and bag and walked out of the class. It was so wierd, he is usually so into discussion but either he was embarrassed by being laughed at, not used to being argued with for his ideas, or insulted that we are all "clients". Anyways- it was a wierd situation.
